1. What “passing the licence” usually means in Spain
For most car learners (permiso B), the path includes:
- Theory exam (conocimiento) — multiple-choice rules, signs, safety.
- Practical exam (circulación / manoeuvres) — with an examiner, after training.
- Administrative steps — identity, medical psycho-physical certificate, fees, and appointment booking through official channels.
TeoriaPass focuses on theory preparation: free question banks, mocks, permit guides and articles so you arrive at the official exam with clearer knowledge. Practical driving lessons are usually done at an autoescuela (see city school pages).
2. Main permit categories (orientation)
Exact vehicle limits and ages are set by Spanish regulations — always verify on DGT. Student-oriented summary:
| Permit | Typical focus | Theory practice on TeoriaPass |
|---|---|---|
| B | Cars / light vehicles | Largest bank — free mocks ~30Q |
| A1 / A2 / A | Motorcycles by power steps | Free motorcycle topics & mocks |
| AM | Mopeds / light vehicles | Free AM bank |
| C1 / C | Trucks | Free C bank |
| D1 / D | Buses | Free D bank |
| B+E / C+E | Trailers / combinations | Free BE / CE banks |
Read deep pages: B, A, AM, C, D, BE, CE.
3. Theory exam — what students typically prepare for
3.1 Common B-exam shape (verify officially)
- Often described as about 30 questions, limited time (often ~30 minutes), small error allowance (often spoken of as max 3 errors).
- Other permits may use different question counts and error limits — check DGT and your school.
- Official exam language rules are set by authorities (Spanish and co-official languages where applicable). TeoriaPass helps you understand first, then practise exam-style wording — free.
3.2 Topic clusters that appear again and again
- Signs & markings: shape/colour meaning, temporary works, lane arrows.
- Priority: STOP vs give-way, unmarked intersections, roundabouts, tram/bus priority.
- Speed: urban / open road / motorway defaults; when signs override; wet/fog caution.
- Alcohol & drugs: general vs novice vs professional limits — trap questions mix them.
- Documents & ITV: what to carry, validity stickers/cards.
- Lights & visibility: dipped / main beam, fog, daytime running.
- Vulnerable users: pedestrians, cyclists, scooter riders, children near schools.
- Breakdowns / emergencies: hard shoulder rules, V-16 beacon timeline (see articles).
- Loads & projecting objects: marking rules that catch careless readers.
3.3 Classic traps (study these deliberately)
- Confusing STOP (complete halt) with give-way (yield only if needed).
- Applying the wrong alcohol limit (novice vs general).
- Believing outdated “+20 km/h overtaking” myths.
- Mixing motorway hard-shoulder rules with urban parking habits.
- Ignoring that some “common sense” answers are wrong under the written rule.
Use free articles: Blog index — alcohol, roundabouts, ITV, V-16, speed, lights, and more.
4. Free 30-day theory plan (permiso B style)
- Days 1–3: Pick permit B on Practice home. Do 2 short topic sessions/day. Read Permit B guide.
- Days 4–10: Cover signs, priority, speed. After each wrong answer, write one sentence “why”.
- Days 11–16: Alcohol, documents, ITV, lights, vulnerable users. Read matching blog posts.
- Days 17–22: Full mocks only — target pass with margin (not bare minimum).
- Days 23–27: Weak-topic drills only (your highest error themes).
- Days 28–30: Light mocks + rest. Confirm official booking details on DGT/sede — not on TeoriaPass.
If you have less time: compress topics into mornings and mocks into evenings, but never skip reviewing wrong answers.
5. Documents, medical certificate & fees (orientation only)
Students commonly prepare some mix of:
- Identity document (DNI / NIE / passport situation as applicable).
- Residence / administrative status if you are a foreign resident — rules depend on your case; verify officially.
- Psycho-physical / medical certificate from an authorised centre (centros de reconocimiento).
- Photos and fee payments as listed by the authority or your school’s admin desk.
Medical centres: prices, opening hours and validity periods vary by city. TeoriaPass does not sell certificates and does not book appointments. Find authorised centres through official DGT information.
Fees: government rates and school packages change. Treat any euro amounts you hear from friends as outdated until you confirm.
6. Practical exam — how it fits with free theory practice
Passing theory does not replace practical training. Typical practical path:
- Theory confidence rising (mocks consistently green).
- Enrol at an autoescuela for manoeuvres and road hours.
- Practice exam routes near your centre.
- Official practical exam with examiner.
TeoriaPass does not replace an instructor. It keeps your rules knowledge sharp while you spend money only where it matters: real driving hours (at a school of your choice — TeoriaPass has no school fees and no paid unlocks).
7. Foreign residents & language strategy
- Understand each rule in your strongest language first.
- Re-read the same idea in Spanish exam wording.
- Memorise sign shapes/colours visually (language-independent).
- Practise free EN/ES mocks on TeoriaPass until Spanish stems feel familiar.
Co-official languages (Catalan, Galician, Basque, Valencian) may be relevant depending on exam centre — confirm officially. TeoriaPass supports multi-language study as an independent tool.
8. Choosing a driving school (checklist)
- Clear contract: hours included, extra-hour price, manual vs automatic.
- Instructor language you can follow.
- Proximity to home/work and exam areas.
- No “guaranteed pass” pressure or cash-only opaque deals.
- Keep theory free on TeoriaPass — do not pay twice for the same MCQ bank if the school materials are weak.

9. What TeoriaPass is / is not
- Is: 100% free independent theory practice + free study articles, guidelines, and school orientation pages.
- Is not: DGT, government booking, official autoescuela, guaranteed pass, or a paid unlock shop.
