How to book the Spain theory test (examen teórico) — complete guide

Independent student guide · 100% free · Not the DGT · Not a booking portal

Disclaimer: TeoriaPass does not book exams. Official appointments are only through the DGT / sede or your autoescuela. Always verify steps on government sites. See our full Disclaimer.

1. What you are booking

The Spain car path usually needs a theory exam (prueba de conocimientos / teórico) and later a practical exam. This article focuses on booking the theory appointment (cita previa for aptitude tests).

Exact names of procedures on the DGT website can change. Use the official electronic office and follow the labels shown there on the day you book.

2. Official links (bookmark these)

Important: Spain’s online cita previa for many DGT procedures is centralised on sede.dgt.gob.es. You normally do not get a different “secret booking website” per city. You choose your province / centre inside the official system (or your driving school books for you).

3. Two common ways students book

A) Through your driving school (autoescuela)

Many students let the school manage paperwork and request the theory date. Ask the school:

City orientation pages (informational only): Driving schools by city.

B) Yourself on the DGT sede

  1. Open sede.dgt.gob.es
  2. Identify with the login method the site accepts (Cl@ve, digital certificate, or other options shown that day)
  3. Look for aptitude tests / driving licence exam / cita previa services (labels may vary)
  4. Select your province and available centre / slot
  5. Save or print the confirmation

If the website shows no slots, try again later or ask a school — availability changes by province and season.

4. What to prepare before booking (orientation)

Requirements differ by person (first licence, exchange, resident status). Confirm on DGT pages — do not trust social-media checklists alone. More detail: Documents & medical.

5. After you book — study plan

  1. Practise free mocks on TeoriaPass home until you pass with margin
  2. Read licence guidelines and exam-day checklist
  3. Arrive early with required documents
  4. If you fail: review weak topics free here, then re-book only via official / school channels

6. City-by-city: where people usually sit theory (orientation)

Exam centres are managed under DGT provincial structures. Online booking still goes through the official sede in most cases. Below: city orientation + the same official booking entry point. Open your city page for local school tips.

For every city page we publish (including Pamplona, Oviedo, Santander, Logroño, Badajoz, Cáceres and more), the message is the same: you can start theory-test booking from the official DGT sede — sede.dgt.gob.es — or ask your local autoescuela to request the cita. See the full list: Driving schools / cities.

7. Red flags — do not book here

8. Free practice while you wait for your date

Once your cita is set, keep daily free mocks on TeoriaPass. Home is for practice only; reading pages stay separate.
